A SEMrush Review for Beginners

    Even though I am not new to this area of marketing, SEMrush is something that is new to me. I have used other search engine optimization tools including Moz, but this is the first time I've tried my hand at SEMrush. SEMrush is a search engine optimization tool that helps businesses with competitive intelligence research and their SEO strategy (Hasic, 2020). SEMrush can be used by any kind of marketer and is very helpful for developing the best SEO strategy possible. The platform offers a variety of marketing tools such as organic research, traffic analytics, keyword gap, site audit, position tracking, etc (SEMrush, n.d.-a). The SEMrush SEO toolkit lessons are very helpful in learning how to use SEMrush as well as certain aspects that pertain to creating a project. 

Benefits 

    SEMrush presents many benefits to businesses or individuals that choose to use it. As I mentioned above, SEMrush offers many capabilities in relation to SEO and web practices. The numerous benefits include a better understanding of your website's performance, the collection and usage of valuable keywords, and even earning backlinks (WebFX, n.d.). With site performance, SEMrush can show you how much traffic your receive (organic and paid) and how you rank for keywords. With this information, a business can optimize their SEO strategy to rank higher for specific keywords and in return increase website traffic. Long-tail keywords are more beneficial because they will bring in more relevant leads, giving your business a better chance to convert them (WebFX, n.d.). 

Project

    Since we are in the beginnings of creating a project on SEMrush, I would like to learn more about brand monitoring and the backlink audit. With brand monitoring, SEMrush tracks all online mentions of specified keywords or phrases that are related to your brand (SEMrush, n.d.-b). This tool offered by SEMrush makes it easy for PR professionals and brand managers to stay on top of their brand's reputation. Backlink audits can also be performed by SEMrush. A backlink audit looks at your website's backlink profile in order to understand which are trustworthy and which are toxic (SEMrush, n.d.-c). This tool provides an analysis of all skeptical links and a disavow file that can be sent to Google. By integrating your site with Google Search Console and Google Analytics, SEMrush can provide your business with more accurate data.  

    As of right now, I have yet to choose a company for my SEMrush project but I have created an example project for my blog so that I can learn the ins and outs. So far, I have set up the tools for site audit, backlink audit and organic traffic. My site audit score is 76% (which isn't great, but not horrible either), my backlink number is 0 and the number organic traffic sessions is 10 (+67%) since last Sunday. Since the organic traffic insights tool is linked to my Google Analytics account, I do not have to switch websites to view metrics like users, new users, sessions, pages per session, average session duration, and bounce rate.

Favorite Feature

    One of my favorite features that I have gotten to play with is the keyword magic tool. This tool is similar to that offered by Moz as it allows a business to find suitable keyword that is related to one you already use (Blog Pioneer, 2020). The tool generates list of keywords and phrases along with metrics like search volume, keyword difficulty, and average CPC. Having a tool like this integrated into SEMrush is helpful because everything you need is in the same place. When running a project, you don't have to bounce around to separate sites to find what you need.

    I like that you mentioned the lessons! It is important to understand what each area means as there really is a lot of information on there that we need to take in and really dig deeper to what we do with that information.

    Do you have an idea of a brand you may want to focus on for your project? Do you feel that there are some industries that may have better results than others?

Unique Visitors: What makes you stand out?

     The metric of unique visitors is defined as "the number of individual people within a defined reporting timeframe that visited a site" (Reed College of Media, 2021). This metric falls under the category of acquisition metrics as it is indicative of how effective your marketing strategies are at bringing users to your site (Abbamonte, 2019). This metric is important to measure for websites because it tells a business what kind of traffic they're getting, how much, and as an industry comparison (Schneider, 2021).
